Pokerstars SNG Promotion

Pokerstars SNG Promotion - Battle of the Planets

Pokerstars have a great SNG promotion. Known as "The Battle of the Planets", this promotion is ideal for multitable players. This weekly promotion results in an approximate $3million giveaway each year.

Take me to Pokerstars.com.

How the SNG Promotion works

There are eight different SNG divisions, split into buyin categories. The divisions are named after planets. For example, if you place in a $6.50 SNG you will receive points in the Venus category.

Each division is split into Low and High (orbits). To complete a low orbit, you must play in 20 SNG's within that category. The low orbit is split into 20 game blocks, 1-20, 21-40, etc. You can chose to play 20 games, or you can opt to play 100 and your best 20 block will be calculated on the leaderboard. Only your first 5 blocks will count towards this category.

The high orbit is geared towards multitable players. This is for players who can churn out 100+ SNG's per week, you can play an unlimited amount of blocks in this category and your best 100 block will be counted for leaderboard purposes.

BUY-IN DIVISION LOW ORBIT HIGH ORBIT PRIZE POOL
$1-$2.99 Mercury $1500 $1500 $3,000.00
$3-$4.99 Mars $2000 $2000 $4,000.00
$5-$9.99 Venus $2500 $2500 $5,000.00
$10-$19.99 Earth $3000 $3000 $6,000.00
$20-$49.99 Neptune $3500 $3500 $7,000.00
$50-$99.99 Uranus $4000 $4000 $8,000.00
$100-$299.99 Saturn $4500 $4500 $9,000.00
$300+ Jupiter $5000 $5000 $10,000.00

SNG's do not always have the same number of players, for example, the 5 card draw games usually only have six players at the table. Top two players receive points. As you can see from the chart below, if you place 2nd in a 6 player SNG, you will receive 21 points. If you play in a 27 player (3 table) SNG, and place 4th, you will receive 16 points. This form of scoring balances out scoring v difficulty of placing. If at the end of the block, you find yourself short of a few points, you can take a gamble and play a 3 table SNG, in the hope of boosting your score for an 80 points win.

PLACE/PLAYERS 6 8 9 10 12 16 18 27
1st 39 40 45 50 54 55 61 80
2nd 21 24 27 30 32 41 46 58
3rd - 16 18 20 22 26 30 38
4th - - - - - 14 16 22
5th - - - - - - - 18

You can play in as many categories as you want, so if you find yourself lacking in one catagory during that week, you can switch to a different buyin category. You can mix and match your games but the points will only be contributed to the category which relates to the buyin.

Top ten players from each category receive a ticket to the monthly $50,000 tournament. You can win as many of these tickets as you want, and play them on any given month. These tickets are gold dust as there are usually only 400 or so players each month, all playing for a share of the $50,000.

On top of the exclusive tournament ticket, players who remain on the leaderboard in each category will receive a share of the weekly prize pool. You can win multiple prizes, i.e., both the high and low orbits, and all eight buyin divisions.

  • $1-$2.99 Mercury pays out 100 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $3-$4.99 Mars pays out 50 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $5-$9.99 Venus pays out 40 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $10-$19.99 Earth pays out 30 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $20-$49.99 Neptune pays out 20 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $50-$99.99 Uranus pays out 15 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $100-$299.99 Saturn pays out 10 places on both the high and low orbits.
  • $300+ Jupiter pays out 5 places on both the high and low orbits.

How do I approach the SNG promotion?

Of all sites online, I find pokerstars the easiest to multitable. The software is probably the fastest. The tables fill up quicker than any other site online.

I generally play 18 player turbo tournaments. These games are completed in under an hour. I play either 8 or 12 tables simultaneously. This means that I will generally complete a low orbit 20 block within 2 hours and a high orbit 100 block within 10 hours.

You may think 12 tables at a time is a bit much, sure it takes a bit of practice but once you do, it is easy enough.

In the early stages of these games, I will play a fairly tight game; I will push if I have a decent hand preflop. As I get to the later stages, I'm generally out of a few tournaments, the rest; I'm fighting for the place and the points. 12 games, now become eight, it seems somewhat slower and I have time to concentrate on the games in hand, I play more aggressively, start stealing a few blinds and fight for that winning spot. Once I've finished my last game, I make myself a coffee, have a stretch and start the whole process again.

You may be wondering how someone can focus on 12 tables at a time. Well, you are probably not at your best on all tables but if you know how to play mechanically at the early stages, you should do well. Take out the bluffers; minimize your risk taking until the blinds go to about 150/300, then open up a little.

As you can imagine, the 100 block is less competitive, many players don't quite get around to completing 100 games. If you can multitable, it's quite possible. I've managed 200+ in a day and still made the leaderboards. I'm by no means an exceptional player but I am consistent. I grind out the SNG's and churn out the results, praying off other players ill timed bluffs and general bad play

That's about it. Good luck with your " Battle of the Planets" SNG promotion at Pokerstars!
